Design Blog: A Modern Glass Wine Room

Gone are the days of wine cellars being dark, dingy spaces hidden in a basement. Today’s wine displays are the center of attention with glass enclosures, floor to ceiling wine racks, and lighting to illuminate the collection. With a wide range of designer wine rack options, and finishes the possibilities are endless. Take a deeper look at a recent project that is sure to inspire you.

The Concept

When a Dallas, Texas homeowner was designing his dream home, his main requirement was to have his prized wine collection be a focal point. Perfection was achieved with this beautiful wine room in the middle of his main living space. The design is simple, streamlined, and luxurious, with a focus on the wine.

The Design

This walk-in wine room provides a dramatic appearance with views of the collection from the home’s entrance, billiards lounge, living room, bar area, and kitchen. The 1,200-bottle wine room combines acrylic wine racks and white oak bulk storage bins to maximize capacity and functionality. The white stone wall, at the back of the space, sets off the wine display with an added element of texture.

The Features

We used the Elevation Collection wine racks with clear acrylic bottle cradles, and silver posts. Frameless glass on three sides of the wine room provide views through the space and the clear acrylic wine cradles give the illusion of floating bottles. The racks on the back wall are a mix of cork-forward and angled display, while the racks along the glass are label-forward to easily view the collection. The top header and base of the wine racks, as well as the bulk bins feature quarter sawn white oak with clear satin finish to match the wood throughout the adjoining kitchen and entertaining space. Colored accent lighting was used throughout the wine room to set the mood, and create an aesthetic to showcase the wine.

The Benefits

The combination of finishes chosen for this wine room – from white oak, to clear acrylic and natural stone - blend seamlessly with the transitional aesthetic of the home. Use of glass, and clear acrylic provided unobstructed views of the wine and beyond. The mixed-use storage including individual bottle displays and bulk storage meet the need for capacity and function. This cellar is a stunning example of wine and design.
