Design Blog: An Understairs Wine Display

Of all the options available for custom wine storage solutions, space under the stairs continues to be a popular go-to for many homeowners. For some it’s the idea of optimizing otherwise underutilized space. For other it’s about converting a blank canvas into a show stopping wine display. And for many, it’s the only space in the home that doesn’t yet have a purpose. Regardless of how you arrive at an understairs wine cellar, the results will undoubtedly add to the ambiance of your home. Take a look at just one recent understairs wine cellar project that is sure to inspire you.

The Concept

Homeowners in Dallas, Texas had a unique, empty space that was a main focal point between their living room and front door. They were looking for a wine storage solution to fill the space and accommodate their 200-bottle collection. Key to this concept was an intentional design that ensured the space didn’t look like an afterthought. An Intentional Design Location

This wine room is a focal point in the center of the home.

The Design

Our Vineyard Wine Cellars designer was able to come up with a plan for a wine room that is not only functional but looks as though it has always been there. The space was designed to make the most of the footprint, under the main staircase of this modern home. Located behind the space was a closet, perfect to house the refrigeration unit so that no mechanical equipment is visible inside the wine cellar. The rear closet area also houses overflow storage for an additional 160 bottles. This design made efficient use of every square foot of available space to ensure proper climate control, desired bottle capacity and unique design elements.

The Features

The frameless glass on the front and side of the cellar provides a beautiful view into the space. Millesime designer wine racks were used with satin black anodized aluminum posts and rods. Clear polished acrylic rod brackets give the illusion of floating bottles. The racks are double deep and were designed in an offset pattern to maximize the storage capacity for the collection. Custom LED lighting behind the racking illuminates the space and the Wine Guardian refrigeration equipment will ensure the wine is kept at the optimal temperature.

Clear polished acrylic rod brackets and a custom acrylic shelf add to the aesthetic.

The Benefits

The finishes chosen for the wine cellar integrate seamlessly with the design style of the home. It’s location – near the bar and living space – add to the flow of the entertaining area. The available mechanical space directly behind the cellar made implementation of the refrigeration system less challenging than a typical understairs wine cellar. This project is an excellent example of making the most of the space under the stairs.
