Design Blog: An Elegant Wine Wall Niche

The Concept

Wine collectors in Keller, Texas were looking to convert an unused niche in their dining room into a wine storage space. This beautiful home has a traditional modern feel. The dining room features hand-scraped rich oak flooring and classic wood moldings and a chair rail along with a beautiful black chandelier.

The niche was the perfect size for a reach-in wine wall at 9' wide and just under 2' deep. The space has an elegant, curved transom which was left in tact. The project included demolition of the niche down to studs, insulating the walls and ceiling, reinforcement of the walls and ceiling to support the stone, wine racks, and glass doors. All electrical and ducting for the refrigeration were completed in the adjacent garage and attic above so no components were visible.

The Design

The designer wine racks utilize metal vertical supports mounted floor to ceiling with horizontal metal wine bottle storage rods. The wine racks stand off the back wall making room for ledgestone which adds texture to the space. With a capacity of just over 470 wine bottles, this system features mixed display styles including 3-bottle deep, label-forward wine racks, angled display rows, and u-shelves for bulk wine storage.

The Features

Additional elements include a stemware holder above a wine pouring station. The wine rack finishes are satin black anodized posts and parallel rods with black stained walnut rod brackets to match the flooring and black finishes found throughout the house. Three sets of tempered glass doors allow access to the reach-in wine wall and include matte black door pulls, hinges, and locks.

Dimmable LED lighting in the ceiling, in front of the wine racks, provides ambiance while the LED low profile lighting strips behind the stemware highlight the pouring station.

This wine wall niche is a focal point of this beautiful home and is a perfect example of wine storage that offers both form and function. To see more photos of this beautiful wine cellar, click here.
